Mobile apps have become ubiquitous, and this widespread use has impacted many activities such as shopping and travel. Its impact is most evident in the area of communication where it helps users to stay in touch with each other and to share multimedia photos and videos with relative ease. Many companies are offering these communication services through apps using over-the-top (OTT) technology, and one such company is Houston-based Voxofon.
Founded in 2008, Voxofon’s communication app comes with many unique features. One of the most salient aspects is its calling service through which users can call friends and family anywhere in the world at any time. This service is free between Voxofon users provided both the caller and receiver are registered with Voxofon and have the app installed on their smartphone. To call people who do not have the Voxofon app, the company charges a low rate that is almost 98 percent lower than major cell phone carriers and 50 percent less than that of Skype. In this sense, Voxofon has made international calls much cheaper than before.
Another prominent feature of this app is that users can send or receive unlimited messages containing text, pictures, videos, audios and even location coordinates. Furthermore, Voxofon’s app is compatible with any device and operating system which means users can communicate with each other without technical barriers. It also has the same UI on tablets, Android phones, iOS, Windows phone and Blackberry, so the same app can be used across many devices. This device-independence gives a greater degree of flexibility for users who are always on the go.
Due to these interesting features, Voxofon has seen tremendous growth over the last years. In recognition of this growth, the Houston Business Journal has ranked Voxofon as one the fastest growing companies in Houston and is likely to present an award on Sept. 11.
